UO Boating 101
![]() |
When placing your boat you simply double click the small boat in your backpack and click on the water. |

If something is blocking placement you get an error message. Some of the problems with placing could be that you clicked too close to land, a creature is in the way, or maybe another boat is too close. |

Once you get the boat placed in the water you will get one key put in your backpack and one in your bank-box. If you die onboard your boat the key will stay on your body. Use the extra key in the bank to recall back to the boat. Never take the master key from the bank! Whoever has the key in their possession can command the boat. If you lose your key, you lose your boat. |

The gangplank is automatically locked when you place the
boat. When it is locked no one can walk onto the boat (even
yourself) If you unlock the gangplank to walk onboard ensure that
you relock the plank so no one can follow you on.
If you leave your boat at sea too long it will start to decay. You can simply open the plank to refresh the boat. |

It is really best to recall off the boat key and you will
appear onboard but never have to unlock the plank. All sailing
orders are given to the Tiller man. The default UO macros are very
useful for boat commands.
First you must raise the anchor. Then you can command speed and direction. You can double click the Tiller man while onboard the boat and you will be prompted for a new name for the boat. (Just like renaming a Rune) |
| Boat commands- Raise Anchor, Forward, Forward
Left, Forward Right, Left, Right, Back, Back Left, Back Right, Stop,
Turn Around, and Lower Anchor. Sorry no Port & Starboard, we
use left & right for some odd reason.
Boat speeds- Slow (say slow forward, slow left etc...) One (forward one, back left one etc...) Normal speed (simply say forward, left etc... "normal" speed is assumed) You can store 125 items in the hold of the ship. As long as no one can get on the boat the items are relatively safe. If you lose your key or leave the plank unlocked anyone that gets onboard can empty your hold.

After you are done sailing it is best to dry dock your boat. Let's not clutter our ocean! Lower the anchor, ensure nothing is on the boat deck or in the hold, get off boat, double click the Tiller man. You get an option to dry dock or not. |
Notes:
When you cross a server line at sea your Tiller man will tell you that you are experiencing Turbulent Water. Your backpacks will usually close and the modifiers on your jewelry will lose effect. It is a known bug, and has been for a long time. It is not really a big problem, the work around is very easy. You will need to simply remove and replace your jewelry to get the properties back.
